Nicholas Baumeister - Information Science (USF)
About
Hi, My name is Nicholas Baumeister
I was born and raised in South Jersey, and I lived there for 20 years. I moved to Tampa, Florida in June 2021 after my younger brother graduated high school. I currently work as a cashier at Winn Dixie while attending college. My three main passions in life are bowling, creative arts, and social media. Bowling is my favorite sport and hobby as I go to the Main Event once a week when I am not working. The main things that inspire me the most as an information science major are information technology and statistics. I loved to visualize small datasets, and even large datasets consisting of tens of thousands of reported data. Ever since I was a young boy, I have always loved computers and how a computer works. For example, I started coding in high school as Visual Basic is one of the first programming languages I worked with. My passion for computer and data science came true as I do have four years coursework experience with Python, R, SQL, C++, Java, HTML, and RShiny Apps.
I am currently majoring in information science with a concentration of data science & analytics. I can further develop my data science & analytics knowledge as well as the continuation to gather, analyze, and interpret data from businesses. I chose this major for my bachelor's degree program because I can have a direct impact on a company's success by helping to drive business strategy. Data analytics is a fast-growing field, and the demand for data analyst continues to rise through the next few years. As a future data analyst, I will be a significant resource in the digital age as data cannot be analyzed by a non-human. I currently excel in statistics, business intelligence software systems (Tableau and Power BI), and excellent communication skills as it prepares myself for the real world. During the Spring 2024 semester, I became an undergraduate research assistant for my data and text mining professor. I participated in weekly meetings through Microsoft Teams to discuss progress and strategize future plans for improved efficiency. I leveraged R and Python to implement topic modeling techniques, and generated results from complex datasets.
I will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Information Science with a concentration in data science & analytics this December. Once I graduate from USF (University of South Florida), I am eager to start a career in the data science & analytics field. I will also spend more time networking on LinkedIn, apply for entry level field-related jobs, and gain more experience by doing online certifications. In five years from now, I see myself earning a competitive salary, gaining experience in my field, and continuing to improve my professional communication skills. I also hope to expand my knowledge in my field before attending graduate school to earn a master's degree in data science, and to become a data scientist.
